LAS AGUILAS DEL CIBAO DOMINATE MEXICO
FEBRUARY 2, 2008 - The Dominican league champion Aguilas, who are looking to go back to back with Carib Series championships and crown themselves at home beat Mexico's representative 13-6.
The Mexican champion Yaquis de Obregon are making their first appearance after 27 years. Alfredo Simon pitched for the Aguilas while Cuban Alberto Castillo-Betancourt started for the Yaquis.
Aguilas wasted no time getting on the board and forcing a pitching change as they scored 6 in the first. Rafael Furcal scored the first run from third base on a wild pitch. Victor Diaz hit a ground ruled double to right field driving in fan favorite Miguel Tejada and Edwin Encarnación making it 3-0. With two outs, reliever Isauro Pineda did not fare any better quickly getting tagged for two when Tony Peña Jr. singled to left allowing Luis Polonia and Diaz to score making it a 5-0 game. Freddy Guzman doubled to center scoring Peña to increase their lead to 6-0.
In the second inning Mexico got on the board when Albino Contreras singled to left Roberto Saucedo and Iker Franco crossed home plate to make it 6-2. A record was broken in the bottom of the second inning when Tejada homered to left off Pineda making it his 12th in series history. He was tied with Venezuela's Tony Armas with a total of 11. The hit parade continued as Mendy Lopez doubled to left and drove in Encarnacion to make it an 8-2 game. The crowd asked for more and they got more. In the fourth, the Aguilas did not let up and Tejada continued to deliver as Lopez drove him in with his second RBI of the game blowing it open, 9-2. Mexico showed signs of life in the fifth when Agustin Murillo scored on Carlos Rivera's sac fly. An alert Alfredo Amezaga came around to score on Freddy Guzman's throwing error making it a 9-4 game.
Aguilas threatened again in the fifth loading up the bases and setting up a matchup between Tejada and Pineda. Tejada didn't deliver this time striking out swinging. Reliever Santiago Ramirez opened up the inning for the Aguilas. After two quick outs he lost his control issuing back to back walks to Contreras and Murillo. Amezaga made Ramirez pay hitting a liner to center driving in both cutting the lead to 3, 9-6. After two quiet innings without a score, the Aguilas woke up their fans in the seventh. Guzman doubled to left scoring Diaz for their tenth run. Two batters later Brayan Peña proved why he was the Dominican League MVP crushing the ball to left field for the 2-run shot. Next batter, Tejada kept the rally alive sending Julio Jimenez’ pitch over the left field fence for his 2nd homerun of the game and his 13th in series history.
