VENEZUELA MAKES MEXICO WINLESS IN THE SERIE DEL CARIBE
FEBRUARY 4 - Day 3 featured a meeting between the two winless teams with both Mexico and Venezuela looking for their first victory. The matchup on the mound included pitchers with MLB experience with Justin Lehr throwing for Mexico and Giovanni Carrara for Venezuela. It was a one-sided affair with Venezuela winning 5-0.
Lehr escaped an early threat by Venezuela in the second inning. Lehr loaded the bases on two singles and the first hit batter of the series; however, he induced Jose Martinez into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play. Lehr pitched himself into a jam again in the third and was unable to escape without damage. After two quick outs, Luis Maza and Alberto Callaspo reached base on back to back singles and Robert Perez drew the walk. Selwin Langaine came to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered singling to right field allowing Maza and Callaspo to cross the plate and take the 2-0 lead.
Venezuela chased Lehr in the fifth tagging him for one more run. Maza swinging a hot bat reached base on a single to right. Perez hit a deep double to left field that fell just inside the foul line allowing Maza to score his second run of the game and increasing Venezuela’s lead 3-0. Rolando Valdez got Ramon Castro to hit into the 4-6-3 double play and keep it within reach for Mexico. With two outs in the sixth, Venezuela loaded the bases again on Valdez, but he recovered and struck out Callaspo to end the inning.
The Tigres de Aragua continued to pull away and put two more runs on the board in the ninth. Callaspo doubled to center scoring Maza from first base. Maza scored for the third time making it 4-0. Two batters later, Langaine singled to center giving him his first RBI of the series on Callaspo’s run.
Mexico was unable to score for the first time in the series and they remain winless.
